Regular roof, window and wall seal checks - invaluable !
Finding your van like this after being tucked away for the winter
A complete ceiling replacement all because of a little vent leak
DON’T BE A WALLY WITH WATER
Things aren’t always as they seem. Water leaks can be obvious (like the unsealed roof vent above), but others can require a good dose of Sherlock Holmes as the source may be well up or down stream. Particularly with roof leaks, the tiniest hole or seal crack may be the culprit of some hugely frustrating damage and major inconvenience, not to mention the dreaded mould.
Even brand new vans need roof seal inspections with a full reseal recommended every 5 years or so depending on the manufacturer’s sealant.
Windows and joins are also regular contributors, often not realising until the damage is done and the internal lining begins to bubble and warp.
THE TAMPERER’S TIP!
IS YOUR VAN STORED IN THE OPEN? If exposed to the weather all year round, check your seals more often, every 1-2 years to be sure.
FOR THE DIY’s: New sealants don’t like to hang out with old sealants - they just won’t stick together. So don’t just grab a gun and fill in the holes - make sure you fully remove the old, clean thoroughly ensuring no dirt or moisture. Apply a nice thick bead to ensure it lasts as long as possible and let it dry properly.
